The biggest problem with depression is how it affects the lives of those who live or work with the person with the condition; research has come up with several different types now, each with its own unique characteristics and symptoms. People suffer for different reasons but basically it is a result of having some unresolved issues in their lives; although it is perfectly normal to be depressed on occasion. Initially, it is important you recognize you have issues, and to get professional medical guidance to help you; professionals can help with the situation but also discover the root cause of the condition.

Throughout our lives there will be many occasions when we will feel low in the same way that there are times when you feel really happy; a person is not necessarily diagnosed with depression just because they feel this way. Probably the most likely cause is stress, often owing to family or other relationship problems which for one reason or another cannot be readily solved; if you're having difficulties in dealing with an issue and you are 'stressed out', you will need to find a way out of it. In many incidences like this, a person believes that if they ignore the problem it will just resolve itself but this rarely happens; as a consequence sufferers make themselves ill with worry which may appear as a physical illness but will more than likely appear as a mental condition.

Another common cause of depression is found in the workplace and problems can arise in the relationships with co-workers; without an intermediary stepping in these circumstances often result in the person suffering with panic attacks as well. This type of situation can make carrying out normal work duties difficult and will often result in the person taking long term sickness leave; at which point a specialist counselor should be called in to resolve whatever conflict or issues exist. It is also possible that certain medications can cause chemical imbalances that create a feeling of depression; this can produce symptoms that mimic exactly those of someone who is depressed.

Usually, as soon as the medication is stopped, the chemical imbalance will correct itself and the person will return to normal but they still need to make their doctor aware of the situation and to keep a check. The hardest cases of depression to deal with are those where there is no apparent cause; a situation like this can make treating the condition much more complicated. The difficulty is getting to person to admit to the problem in the first instance; when this happens the person cannot associate the condition with the cause.

One of the types of depression that is extremely difficult to diagnose is called Bipolar Disorder; it can actually take up to five years to get the diagnosis correct! The most important aspect of treatment is for the patient to recognize they have a problem and taking the responsibility to actually do something to cure it. There is no point letting this condition run your life unless you enjoy the distress it causes you and those around you; the awful feelings that have been experienced for so long will eventually come to an end.
